” My hypnobirthing journey – When Graham and I found out we expecting, we knew that we wanted a natural, and hopefully medication free birth. Making this a reality seemed a little daunting when most mums I knew told me of their traumatic painful birth stories. Then I heard about hypnobirthing, and contacted Janet! Best decision I ever made and I am so thankful for the skills I learned and the information we received that helped us make our birth story so positive and beautiful. It also allowed Graham to be more involved in both my pregnancy and the birth.
We decided a home birth would be the best option for us, as we agreed we would be more relaxed, we would have all the comforts we needed and would not need to find a dog sitter either. My pregnancy went very well, until about month 7 when I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes- I took it in my stride and didn’t allow it to put me off the birth that I wanted – it was only when I saw a consultant at week 36 who said she would very much advise being in hospital with me being “high risk” as the chances of stillbirth, shoulder dystocia and hypoglycaemia where all higher. I panicked and had a moment where I thought I must go to hospital.
After more and more research and reassurance from a fellow mum who had a homebirth whilst having gestational diabetes , we decided we still wanted a homebirth…I began monitoring my blood sugars religiously and kept them within a good range through a controlled diabetic diet and light exercise which the consultant was happy with and which meant that the growth scans were showing that she was growing perfectly well Then it happened…more beautifully than I’d even visualised.
At week 38+5 I woke up at 6am to my waters breaking, went back to bed till 8:30am, then got up and walked our doggy Billy. Graham and I ate breakfast, and I got my first powerful surge, by 10am I knew things had really stepped up and we called the midwives to come. As the midwives where on their way Graham saw the head crowning and we knew it wouldn’t be long. As soon as the midwives arrived, I was fully crowned and ready. Jasmine was born at 11:32am totally medication free on our living room floor.
It was totally euphoric and exceeded every visualisation I’d had of the day. Only disappointment we had was not being able to fill the pool in time. Next time we will start filling straight away…just in case…and if not I am sure it will make a pretty awesome paddling pool in the future. We are so delighted to have brought Jasmine in to the world the way we wanted, and so thankful for Janet’s guidance.”
